Grade 2 is the standard for most domestic properties — it covers typical residential risks and satisfies the majority of home insurance requirements. Grade 3 is required for higher-risk commercial premises, businesses that want police response, or properties that have previously been targeted. Grade 4 is reserved for the highest-risk environments. Yes, in many cases. A significant number of home and business insurers offer reduced premiums for properties fitted with an alarm from an NSI-approved installer. Some policies actually require a Grade 2 or higher system as a condition of cover, particularly for higher-value homes or commercial policies. When we install your alarm, we can provide the NSI documentation your insurer may ask for. It is always worth contacting your insurer before installation, as the type and grade of system can affect the discount you receive.
A police-response alarm is a Grade 3 system connected to an Alarm Receiving Centre (ARC) that monitors your premises 24 hours a day. When the alarm triggers, the ARC attempts to verify the activation — for example by calling your key holders or using audio or video confirmation. If the activation appears genuine and unresolved, they contact the police to attend the property. Police response requires the alarm to be installed by an NSI-approved company, and you must register with your local police force. J4 Security Systems can handle the full setup process for you.
Both have genuine advantages. Wired alarm systems use physical cabling between the control panel and sensors, making them highly reliable and free from radio-frequency interference — ideal for larger properties or buildings where cables can be concealed during construction or renovation. Wireless systems use encrypted radio signals, so there is minimal disruption to decoration and they can be installed quickly with less disturbance. Hybrid systems combine both approaches, using wired detectors where practical and wireless where running cables would be intrusive. In most cases, yes. Many older alarm systems can be upgraded by replacing the control panel, adding new wireless sensors alongside existing wired ones, or integrating smart features such as smartphone notifications and remote arming. We also take over maintenance of existing systems installed by other companies — so if your previous provider has let you down or gone out of business, we can assess your system and either service it or recommend a targeted upgrade.
